The New VW GTI @ 2008 Paris Motor Show FOR FULL 2008 MOTOR SHOW COVERAGE, CHECK OUT:www.insideline.comWOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen will use the 2008 Paris Auto Show as a launch pad for its new sixth-generation 2010 Golf GTI. The new performance-based hatchback follows closely on the heels of the standard sixth-generation Golf, which is also due to get its first public debut in the French capital next week and then go on sale in Europe. Both cars are planned to go on sale simultaneously in North America in October 2009. The GTI is part of an intensive new-model thrust aimed at netting Volkswagen significant sales growth. The automaker's ambitious 10-year business plan aims to achieve 800,000 sales per year in the U.S. by 2018.The Golf GTI to be revealed in Paris is described as a concept. Sources at Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters tell Inside Line it is highly representative of the production version that is due to reach European showrooms next April. It's an unwritten law among German carmakers that any car displayed more than six months prior to market introduction is billed as a concept — or studie, as Volkswagen prefers.Powering the latest incarnation of the GTI is VW's new EA888 four-cylinder engine in turbocharged 2.0-liter form. Developed by Audi as part of a world engine program, the transversely mounted unit kicks out 210 horsepower, which is 10 hp more than the current GTI. Torque, however, remains the same, rising to a peak of 206 pound-feet at just 1,800 rpm.As before, drive goes to the front wheels via either a standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed double-clutch gearbox that has steering-wheel-mounted paddles and a full automatic mode. The 2010 GTI gets an electronic differential for the first time, called XDS, that operates through an enhanced electronic stability program to help power get to the road cleanly and efficiently.Volkswagen claims the new car will sprint from zero to 60 mph in under 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 149 mph. Combined fuel consumption averages better than 30 mpg on the European cycle. CO2 emissions, on which some European markets base road tax, have dropped to 178g/km.The underpinnings are a development of those used in the old GTI with a combination of MacPherson struts at the front and multilinks at the rear. It sits 0.8 inch closer to the ground than the standard Golf and rolls on unique 18-inch wheels shod with 225/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The new GTI also gets adaptive damping as on the Scirocco. Known under the name DCC (dynamic chassis control), it provides three levels of suspension stiffness: normal, comfort and sport. The system also alters mapping of the steering and throttle for sharper and more immediate responses in sport mode. The GTI will be available in three- and five-door body styles and gets a distinctive body kit. Visual cues include a deep new front bumper with gaping central air duct and vertically stacked foglamps, as well as an altered grille with classic GTI touches. All are design elements that first emerged on the wild midengine W12 650 concept car. Other changes include wider sills underneath the doors, a prominent spoiler atop the hatch and a new rear bumper carrying an altered valance cover bookmarked by twin chromed tailpipes. The sporty theme continues inside with the traditional checkered cloth seats, unique dashboard trim, leather-hooded gearlever and aluminum-finish pedals. The classy instrument graphics and three-spoke multifunction flat-bottom steering wheel are shared with the recently introduced Passat CC and add some upmarket flair. The rest of the cabin is brought over from the standard Golf, including the extensive options list with such high-end items as radar-controlled collision avoidance, a touchscreen navigation system supported by a 30GB hard disk, reverse-view camera and parallel parking assistant. The GTI is not likely to be the last of the hot Golfs headed to North America. Volkswagen is also said to be preparing another new model with an upgraded version of its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with Audi's new valve lift system as a possible replacement for the four-wheel-drive 250-hp 3.2-liter V6-powered R32. The new engine, which is also found in the Audi S3, delivers 265 hp — enough to give the new Golf real kick, as one Volkswagen insider enthuses. |

. : GOLF VI GTI CONCEPT 2009 : . In 1976 the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk I was launched as a low volume addition to the Golf range. Thirty two years, five generations and 1.7 million sales after that car established the breed, the sixth generation of the Volkswagen Golf GTI has been unveiled in concept form ahead of its public debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. The core attributes of the original VW Golf GTI - sharp dynamics, style and practicality - remain in the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept. Yet the new car uses the latest advances in drivetrain and chassis technology designed to enhance rather than detract from the purity of the driving experience. The strut-type front and multi-link rear suspension architecture from the conventional Golf are adopted in modified form on the GTI. Specially tuned springs, dampers and anti-roll bars are joined, for the first time on the GTI, by the option of Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) which comprises adjustable pneumatic dampers. With three settings ranging from 'comfort' to 'normal' and 'sport' the ACC system also remaps the steering and throttle response to give a vehicle that can strike a balance between sharp dynamics and body control and comfort while driving in urban areas or on motorways. For the first time the new Volkswagen Golf GTI features an electronic limited slip differential (XDS) linked to a sophisticated ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) system in order to maximise traction and improve responses.Powering the Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept is a 2.0-litre four cylinder TSI engine developing 210 PS - a gain of 10 PS over the Mk V GTI. Despite this gain the new engine is both more efficient, returning 37.6 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 178 g/km of CO2 compared to 189 g/km for the outgoing car. Installed in the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept the 2.0-litre TSI engine allows the vehicle to accelerate from standstill to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds before reaching a top speed of 148 mph making it the fastest standard production GTI yet produced.A team of three designers are responsible for the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept: Walter de Silva (Director, Group Design), Klaus Bischoff (Director, Brand Design) and Marc Lichte (Director, Exterior Design). The new car bears clear visual links with the original. 'We wanted a consistently clear GTI design, a car that has power, but style as well,' commented Walter de Silva. This is apparent in the red grille surround that echoes the original, along with the horizontal grille fins and elegant yet purposeful new headlights featuring individual lamp pods behind a translucent cover. In profile the side skirts of the VW Golf Mk V that extended the length of the sill are replaced by subtle wraparound versions that extend only partially along the lower edge of the vehicle. At the rear a set of GTI smoked rear light lenses are joined by a rear diffuser channelling air from beneath the vehicle that's in turn framed by a pair of chrome tailpipes. The distinctive 18-inch 'telephone dial' wheels from the VW Golf GTI Mk V make a reappearance, albeit in subtly evolved form on the Mk VI Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept. Finished in milled silver with gloss black inserts, the new wheels are reminiscent of those first fitted to the Volkswagen Golf GTI W12 650 Concept.Continuing the unique modifications to the GTI over the conventional Golf is a new interior. Drawing on the all-new interior of the Mk VI Golf the GTI features a flat-bottomed steering wheel finished in black leather with contrasting red stitching. A set of contoured sports seats finished in grey tartan cloth reminiscent of the Mk I and Mk V models are joined by unique instruments and gloss black dashboard and door trim inserts framed by silver highlights. As with all Golf models the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept is fitted with a high level of standard equipment including seven airbags, a CD stereo, climate control and ESP.The Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept is intended as a first step towards the VW Golf GTI which will start production in spring 2009. |

Volkswagen Golf MK VI GTI - 2009 - Live Preview of the GTI Mk6 on the Road Volkswagen today took the wraps off a pre-production version of the all-new GTI, based on the recently redesigned Golf. Described as a concept, the GTI show car will be on display at the Paris Motor Show next month. In reality, it is almost identical to the production GTI that will arrive at European dealers in the spring. The new GTI features a number of firsts for the range, including the option of Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) which comprises adjustable pneumatic dampers. Also for the first time, the GTI will be available with an electronic limited slip differential (XDS) linked to a sophisticated ESP (Electronic Stabilization Program) system.Powered by a 2.0-liter 207 horsepower TSI engine, the new GTI is more powerful, yet also more fuel efficient, than its predecessor. Fuel consumption is estimated at 31.3 miles per U.S. gallon — an impressive figure for a car that can sprint to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 148 mph.Styling was handled by Walter de Silva (Director, Group Design), Klaus Bischoff (Director, Brand Design) and Marc Lichte (Director, Exterior Design). The car bears visual links with the original 1976 model. We wanted a consistently clear GTI design, a car that has power, but style as well, commented Walter de Silva. The 18-inch telephone dial wheels from the Mk V GTI make a reappearance, albeit in subtly evolved form on the Mk VI GTI. Finished in milled silver with gloss black inserts, the new wheels are reminiscent of those first fitted to the GTI W12-650 concept.Interior highlights include a flat-bottomed steering wheel finished in black leather with contrasting red stitching, plus a set of contoured sports seats finished in grey tartan cloth reminiscent of the Mk I and Mk V models.ow the new one stands in the starting hole: On of Paris the engine show (4 until 19 October 2008) Volkswagen presents the study to new gulf of the GTI in a world premiere. The GTI chassis with new electronic transverse barrier (XDS) redefines curves and traction completely. 239 km/h a fast GTI, with its 155 KW/210 HP still more fun makes strong turbo engine for which and on the average only 7.5 litres used up. In the spring 2009 the sixth gulf GTI will go into series - as used with a singular connection out of sporty chassis and agilem engine. Already with 1.800 rpm the engine develops a maximum torque of 280 Newtonmeters. After 7.2 seconds is carried out the Sprint of 0 to 100 km/h. Only with 239 km/h a Patt between air resistance and achievement prevails. By 22 millimeters below put and with a new sport chassis equipped, feathers/springs, absorbers and the rear stabilizers of the study were completely again co-ordinated. Beyond that also for the future GTI as optional feature the adaptive chassis regulation DCC will be available. „We wanted a consistently clear GTI Design, a car, which Kraft, but evenly also Stil" has; , it brings the chief designer Volkswagen AG, walter de`Silva, on the point. Into of Paris study shown of the sixth generation lets merge now style elements of these two GTI icons. The GTI V contributes details like the typically wabenförmigen radiator grilles and the V-shaped one and to hood which is enough over the headlights. The clear, horizontal adjustment meanwhile decreases/goes back clearly to the GTI I. By this style means as well as the horizontal basic diagram of the front portion the gulf GTI study works optically more broadly (1,78 meters), more deeply (1.47 meters) and more dynamically than every other car of this class. |
